The cruise to Raitea was just long enough to enjoy the wonderful breakfast buffet prepared by the crew of the Luz de Luna. Raven made a mental note to include a nice bonus for the crew in this month’s paychecks. They had gone far beyond what would be expected of them. They seemed to be taking real pleasure in making Talley and Whiskers anniversary cruise the experience of a lifetime. As the ship anchored, the family and guest lined the pool deck rails to catch a glimpse of the mist shrouded peaks of Raitea. It was different than the other islands, in that there were no sandy beaches, instead, the land ended in rocky crags of volcanic rock. The mountains were covered in lush green jungle. Flower and his sisters were snapping photos of the island.
Pete and Neekah Boo smiled when they heard Flower tell his sisters, “We want to get lots of establishing shots”.
Jacques tapped his water glass for attention and announced that their first stop would be at the Sacred Marae of Raitea. He read from his tablet, “Marae Taputapuatea is a large marae complex at Opoa in Taputapuatea, on the south eastern coast of Raiatea. The site features a number of marae and other stone structures and was once considered the central temple and religious center of Eastern Polynesia. The Marae complex that we will visit was already established by 1000 AD with significant expansion after this time. The marae was a place of learning where priests and navigators from all over the Pacific would gather to offer sacrifices to the gods and share their knowledge of the genealogical origins of the universe, and of deep-ocean navigation.
Most significantly a truce known as the Faatau Aroha was established with the surrounding islands dived into two alliances known as Aotea (East) and Aouri (West). This alliance lasted for many years and promoted an intense period of exploration leading to the discovery and colonisation of all the islands of Eastern Polynesia including Hawaii, Rapanui and Aotearoa (New Zealand). New marae were established on each of these islands with a rock being taken from Taputapuatea, Raiatea to act as a spiritual link (there are still marae named Tapuatapuatea at Moorea, Rarotonga and Hawaii).
However the Faatau Aroha was finally broken when fighting broke out at a gathering and the two leading ariki of the alliance were killed resulting to open warfare and an end to large-scale interisland voyaging. It is said that the gathered canoes fled the area leaving the lagoon via the pass at Avarua (now Avapiti) rather than the sacred pass at Avamoa because of this a curse fell upon the pass at Avamoa that was not lifted until 1995.”
As the family and guests boarded the launch to make the passage to shore, Jacques handed them each a packet of information on the Marae complex.

Talley and Whiskers watched as the launch approached the each they had come in through, the sacred pass at Avamoa. Talley shivered as if cold and Whiskers asked her if she needed his windbreaker. She shook her head, “No I’m not cold, I just had kind of a fragmentary vision of the islanders coming through this pass, to the Marae. It was almost as if I was with them and we were all chanting sacred words.”
Whiskers knew that Talley’s special gifts had probably given her a glimpse into the real past of this special place. He reflected on the thoughts that navigating the deep Pacific with no more than a chart of strings and shells and a knowledge of the stars and currents was as challenging to the ancient Polynesians as traveling in space was to modern day explorers. When they beached the craft, Pete, Whiskers, Mitch, Thomas and Jesse assisted the crew in getting the kids and girls up on to the rocky beach.
The walked uphill onto a broad plain, where the Marae complex lay spread before them. The Marae was was devoid of visitors at this early hour, though from across the road, some distance away, the sounds of conversation and laughter could be heard coming from the open air market. Jacques told them that after their visit to the Marae they would walk over to the market, where they could see how the inhabitants of Raitea shopped for fresh fruits and vegetables. He told them that there food trucks and stands as well and that if they wished they could have a light snack, before continuing on to other sightseeing.
As they approached the Marae, Talley shivered again and knelt, telling Whiskers, “This truly is a sacred place. Let’s stop and pray for our friends in need of our prayers.”
Whiskers knelt by his beloved and he too could feel the “specialness” of this place. Pete and Neekah Boo followed their example and soon the whole group had been kneeling and offering prayers for friends very far away.

After a time, they rose and continued to examine the beautiful site. There was care in the crafting of the stones and the shields of the noble families. The day was warm and sunny with only a few clods and there was a Blessed tranquility about the place. Flower had found a plaque in English and photographed it. He took lots of photos as did his sisters and the other guest. Kapt Q Kelsee and Snickie lingered, holding paws as the tranquility of the sacred site washed over them. Kelsee told Snickers, “This may be the highlight of our vacation. What a special place this is.”

Jacques led them to the market. They saw piles of Taro, bananas, coconuts, breadfruit and all manner of fresh green veggies.

Taro Bananas & Veggies A contest Husking Coconuts

Pete thought that this really was Eden, so much delicious food just grew in the wild.
Whiskers and Flower sniffed the air and led the family to a small stand that was selling coconut crusted chicken on sticks. They had a snack, and finished with fresh pineapple.
It was time to board the motor coach that Jacques had arranged, they would all tour the circular road around the island, stopping at various points of interest, and then at the end of the day, they would travel to the downtown area for dinner at a very good restaurant. After dinner they would walk across the park to meet the motor launch at the marina,
It was a very special day. One that the whole family, all of the guests and Talley and Whiskers would cherish in their memories forever.

It seemed all too soon, when Lucy tapped on the door of their cottage and told them it was time to leave for hockey!
Pete and Neekah Boo were already standing on the end of the pier, with Snickie and the HT Kitties. Raven and Murphy came running up and they were ready!
The transition from the warm bright day in Polynesia, to the cold and dark outside of the MHL Arena was instantaneous and it was quite a shock. The kitties hurried inside to the relative warmth of the arena.
VFP had no game tonight, so Talley would be able to spend the evening with her beloved Whiskers cheering for the kitty teams. Raven and Murphy helped Maggie, Callie, Orangie and Whitey organize the pennants for the kitty teams, so that they could be handed out quickly. Pete, Whiskers, Winston and Jesse went to the snack bar to get warm drinks for the family.
Kapt Kelsee called a team meeting down on the ice. Angels Lucy and Sylvia flew down to join in with their team mates.
The games did not go well for the kitties, and KCK lost to the TIMS. Lucy was a little irked but soon put things in perspective. Pete reminded her that that they would be returning to the Lux de Luna tonight and that Raven’s crew had promised a special feast and entertainment tonight. She smiled and hugged her brother. Unbeknownst to him, as she hugged him, she sprinkled him with golden healing angel dust. Talley saw what she had done and smiled at Lucy giving her a paw up!
After they had thanked Capt A Easy for Hosting and bid their friends good night, Lucy and Sylvie transported the family and the HT kitties six thousand miles in an instant. They arrived on the deck of the Luz de Luna to find the pool deck the site of dancing and wonderful music. Pearl and Mitch, came from the dance floor to greet them while Thomas and Annabella waved happily from the pool.
The family and the HT kitties hurried to their suites to change into their Polynesian party clothes.
After Pete changed, he went to the Raven and Murphy’s Suite, where Neekah Boo was staying and knocked lightly on the door. Raven answered and whispered to him to very quiet. Raven said, “Neekah Boo wasn’t feeling well this afternoon, just sore and achy, so she took her prescription and has been sleeping for a while. I think she needs to rest.”
Pete was disappointed and concerned; He could see his sweet girlfriend fast asleep on the couch. Raven said, “Don’t worry, Pete. She says she’s okay. She was reading and went to sleep on the couch. When we came in, we asked her if she wouldn’t like to get in her bed. She said no, that she was very comfy where she was so we covered her up. A while ago, she woke up and said she just wanted to rest a little bit more and asked us to wake her when we went down for dinner.”
Pete nodded. “There is a doctor aboard the ship, if Neekah Boo wants to see her, tell all she has to do is ask.” Raven nodded and asked, “Are you going down now, or do you want to wait in your suite and go down with Neekah Boo?”
Pete said, “Stop by my suite, I’ll go down with you and Neekah Boo.”
Sitting by the pool in the early evening Flower and his sisters watched Mitch and Pearl as they danced. Flower said to his sisters, “I’m so glad Uncle Mitch loves our Mom and us. He’s going to be the best dad anyone could have”. Tabitha smiled, “I always knew he loved mama!”
Flower laughed, “It wasn’t like he kept it a secret, but I was wondering if he was ever going to ask mama to marry him.”
Good smells were wafting over the deck, and Flower’s sensitive nose allowed him to identify Pork, Chicken and some kind of fish as well as vanilla and cinnamon. His tummy growled and Liliana looked around then back at him. Liliana said, “I thought Uncle Whiskers was here. Was that your tummy Flower?”
Flower nodded sheepishly. “Uncle Whiskers and I both have talking tummies they tell us when something good is close by!”
Whiskers heard his name mentioned as he came out of the elevator. He came over to the kid’s table and caught Flower and gave him a big hug, as the little skunk jumped into his arms. He smiled, “What were you saying Flower?”
Flower laughed and said, “I told Liliana that you and I have talking tummies that tell us when something good to eat is nearby.”
As if on cue, Whiskers’s Tummy let out a rumble. Talley standing by him began to laugh; soon all of the children were laughing with her while Flower and Whiskers looked perplexed. Talley hugged Whiskers close and kissed him. “I love you so much, please don’t think I’m making fun of you but your tummy’s timing was perfect.”
Whiskers said, Of course it was, something wonderful is being cooked close by!”
Pete and Neekah Boo came out on to the pool deck and Neekah Boo sniffed and said, “Something smells wonderful, what are we having for dinner?”
Raven said, “The Chefs are going to surprise us, I own the ship and they wouldn’t even tell me.”
Neekah Boo sniffed the air again and said, “Whatever it is I don’t think we’re going to be disappointed.” Pete went to the bar and came back with two trays of meowgaritas one tray for the kids had no alcohol, the other tray contained drinks that had a small amount of tequila. Mitch and Pearl came over to join the party, followed by Thomas and Annabella, Pete had remembered that Thomas cared little for alcohol and he handed Thomas on of the meowgaritas from the kids tray. They all took a sip and sighed. It was sunset here in French Polynesia and it was beautiful. Kelsee Winston and the rest of the HT kitties joined the party and as the sun settled into the Pacific the happy kitties soaked in the incredible beauty.
Jacques joined them and even had a drink with them. He said, “Dinner is almost ready and it will be served on a small motu. Actually it’s the one that my dad and I live on. He’s the caretaker. He and I keep it clean and pleasant for visitors and tonight, you all are the only visitors. If you will all come down to the launch deck we’ll be on our way. “
Kelsee asked Talley what a motu was, and Talley explained that motos were tiny islands in the lagoons. Most are uninhabited and wild, but some have facilities for parties and picnics. Dad met Jacques when he and mom were on a picnic here during their visit. Dad and Jacques became friends right away.
They boarded the launches and carefully pulled up to the small pier on Jacques motu. There were torches lighting the way from the pier to a nice tiled pavilion with tables set up.
Pete escorted Neekah Boo to a table and pulled out her chair for her. Whiskers seated Talley and the waiters began bring the food.
There was music for dancing, fine food and a beautiful little island. Flower and Ralph were dancing with their sisters and the girls were having aball. The adults were dancing too and there was nothing more that they could have asked for.
Talley snuggled close in Whiskers embrace as they danced and told, “I can’t imagine what we’ll do next year for our anniversary. This is so perfect!”
Whiskers said, I was kind of thinking about seeing some of Great Britain next year, but there’s plenty of time to plan that.
They ate danced and at last to the launch back to the Lux de Luna and after a last drink of champagne with their friends Talley and Whiskers went up to their suite. Pete escorted Neekah Boo to her suite and told her to sleep as late as she
would like.
Quiet settled over the ship and the gentle rocking lulled the kitties to sleep.
